In Online No Limit Texas Holdem, there are always options as to what you play. There are options for number of tables, opponents, stakes, and types of games. Let’s see how you can zero in on the best game for you.

Full Ring or 6-Max Texes Holdem Poker
I say it depends on your personality and how much attention you are willing to devote to a session. If you are a very “by the numbers” person who likes an outline or specific instructions on how to do things, then full ring is your game. Like to think on the fly? Concentrate on 6-max. Both games require lots of patience. If you are prone to surfing the ‘Net while you play or watching a ball game, then you should be full ringing it. 6-max requires more attention to player tendencies.
The Number of Texas Holdem Poker Tables to Play at Once
I like to mega-multi table full ring games. The blinds are so small and the stacks so deep that you can be very tight with your play and still have a good win rate. Playing many tables will help with your patience as you will get the bigger hands more often and see multiple monster hands per session. In 6 max, however, I like 2, 3, or 4 tables at the most. The idea of this game is to outplay your opponent’s cards, not your own cards. You want to get better at hand reading and adjusting for different player types. Multi tabling 6-max games won’t help you improve in these areas. Mistakes come along at a faster pace and can be more costly too. In summary, mega multi the full ring as much as you can I think, and scale it way down for 6-max.
Deep, Capped, and Turbo Texas Holdem Poker
I like deep games myself, but at the very least play regular buy-in size games. Short stack strategy is shallow in comparison and your learning will be stunted. Play poker, not dice, I always say. Turbo games are fine for 2 or 3 tables, and the players at turbo games are generally loser (less patient). Remember you still have a few seconds to make decisions and worse come to worse you can fold when unsure or your situation before you become pot committed.
Mixing up you Poker Games
I used to keep many full ring games open on one monitor for grinder profits and 2 6-max games of a higher stake open on another for learning and intense play. I’ve stopped doing that however as I found my tactics leaking from one screen to the next. I paused before acting, and the mental adjustments required for switching back and forth kind of gave me a headache. I no longer recommend this as it’s not the best poker you can be playing. I say decide for the month which game you want to play, then settle in to some serious full ring grinding or give the 6-max tables your full attention.
Online First, I think everyone should prove a win rate to himself or herself and find any game-structure leaks. I suggest 20,000 hands or more at $2NL-$10NL full ring. If you cannot show a profitable 20,000 hands at this level of game than you need to keep working on it BEFORE you move up. From there you must look at your bankroll. Be very honest with yourself. If you have been playing $10NL full ring all month and want to try $25-NL 6-max, do not attempt it without $500 (20 buy-ins) in your account. Instead go back to the same old $10NL full ring games even if you are getting bored with it. Challenge yourself to beat it better this month, fix your leaks, and concentrate on your mistake hands. The same goes for moving up from $25NL 6-max to $50NL 6-max. If you don’t have $1000 bank roll in your account then do not kid yourself. Get better and make the bankroll - then move up.
